Description of Workshop/Course: This training is based on a curriculum developed by the Center of Applied Linguistics, and is designed to prepare elementary-level teachers in the skills and knowledge of Category 2 (Sheltered Content Instruction). This training can take place for four non-consecutive days in the summer, or for two days during the school year, an implementation phase, and then another two days of training. There is a pre-course information packet that is sent out by the collaborative prior to the course. Please read in advance of the first day of the course. The course involves 24 contact hours and the remaining work adding up to the required 30-40 hours done outside of class in the form of readings and assignments, and in applying concepts in the teachers classroom. A 3-unit graduate credit option is available through Cambridge College.
Districts should register school-based teams of 3-5 teachers, who are either general classroom elementary teachers or secondary content-area teachers-of-record. The courses are aimed at teachers responsible for the core curriculum areas of Math, English Language Arts, History/Social Studies and Science. One or two registrants from a school are acceptable under the condition that they will be joining other teachers back in the school who have already been trained as a team in prior SEI trainings.
