Enhancing English Language Learning in Elementary and Secondary Classrooms: A Professional Development Program for Category 1 Introduction to Second Language Learning and Teaching-Elementary and Secondary
Description of Workshop/Course: This training was developed through a collaboration between the Massachusetts Department and Elementary Education and the New England Equity Assistance Center, part of the Education Alliance at Brown University. It consists of 12 hours of training, generally delivered in two days. There must be a period of at least one week between two days of training. It is designed as an introductory training session for K-12 teachers of English Language Learners, and covers factors impacting second language acquisition, as well as cultural consideration for teachers in SEI classrooms.
Districts should register school-based teams of 3-5 teachers, who are either general classroom elementary teachers or secondary content-area teachers-of-record. The courses are aimed at teachers responsible for the core curriculum areas of Math, English Language Arts, History/Social Studies and Science. One or two registrants from a school are acceptable under the condition that they will be joining other teachers back in the school who have already been trained as a team in prior SEI trainings.
