General Content Filtering Documentation

MECnet provides three types of content filtering for our customers:
  • Upstream Content Filtering
Upstream Content Filtering is a free service provided to our customers. This method of content filtering is mainly used by those customers using NAT on their router. All web traffic (TCP port 80) coming from the router is redirected to our proxy servers for filtering by our backbone equipment. This method of filtering does not allow to direct control over the website database. Block or unblock request must be submitted to support@mecnet.net.
  • Peering Content Filtering
Peering Content Filtering is also a free service provided to our customers. It works in the same manner as upstream. However, instead of the redirection taking place in our backbone, it happens at the customer end using a JoeBox Firewall/Router. All web traffic (TCP port 80) coming from computers behind the JoeBox will be redirected to our proxy servers for filtering. This method of filtering also does not allow to direct control over the website database. Block or unblock request must be submitted to support@mecnet.net. However, it does allow the ability to make filtering exceptions.
  • Local Content Filtering Local filtering is a separate package and requires a Joebox. It also requires a valid license key from MECnet in order to work. Unlike upstream and peering filtering, customers are able to create their own filtering policies by blocking and unblocking sites using the specially designed web interface. This filtering software is dynamic; any changes made will take affect immediately.

  • Joebox Web Server Support
Our two Joebox servers only support uploading via FTP. They do not support the Microsoft FrontPage® Server Extensions. In order to upload changes to your website you must use an FTP client with a Username and Password. MECnet does not provide or support FTP client software for uploading to our web servers. However, some examples include WSFTP™, CuteFTP™ or the intergraded FTP client in Microsoft® Internet Explorer.
  • Windows 2000 Server
    Microsoft FrontPage® Server Extensions

Our FrontPage® server only supports using the web authoring software included with FrontPage®. This server does not support customers uploading via FTP.
